At Riverbend, we lost power in our facility and subsequently a great deal of malt product\u2014 but we were lucky. Our incredible team stayed safe from the storm, and showed up diligently to help us create a new normal. Once the lights were back on, we were able to donate this unusable malt to farmers for feed and compost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane Helene seemed to fall away from the 24-hour news cycle as quickly as it arrived. We think it\u2019s important to note that for months afterwards, many of our customers worked tirelessly on repairing their facilities, rebuilding their income, and reconnecting with their teams. Everyone in the area felt the impact. To name just a few of the companies that have demonstrated this resilience, we tip our hats to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hillmanbeer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hillman Beer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had significant damage at their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hillmanbeer.com\/old-fort-taproom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old Fort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> location; to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whaleyfarmbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whaley Farm Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who rebuilt their entire building in time to celebrate three years in business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of our customers and partners\u2014 too many to name here without writing the world\u2019s longest blog post\u2014 facilitated heroic relief efforts. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theradbrewco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The River Arts District Brewing Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered hot meals and supplies to anyone in need for weeks; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakandgrist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oak &amp; Grist Distilling Co.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transformed into a potable water station to support their neighbors; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/walnutgrovefarms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walnut Grove Farms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/asrgrainco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASR Grain Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shipped truckload after truckload of supplies to Asheville and nearby areas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cellarestbeer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cellarest Beer Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also offered supplies and meals to their neighbors, and now in gratitude for Blue Ridge Public Radio\u2019s coverage and updates in Hurricane Helene\u2019s aftermath will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOEOexsDSGy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">match 100% of station donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their taproom throughout the month of September to help them recoup losses from federal funding cuts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-featured_large wp-image-7379 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_3806-1179x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1179\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hurricane Helene Relief Beers\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in the wake of Hurricane Helene, we worked with many breweries to provide malt for beers to benefit our community. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/highercallingbeer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSSOLVR\u2019s Higher Calling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drinkncbeer.org\/pouring-for-neighbors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Carolina Brewers Guild\u2019s Pouring for Neighbors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided the springboard to have those conversations. As the beers made their way to taprooms across the nation, we felt <a href=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/brewers-helene-relief\/\">kinship with the broader community<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether our customers crafted these relief beers, or simply just continued purchasing our malt\u2014 they made a tremendous difference in our ability to support our team and community over this past year. Again, we don\u2019t have enough room to acknowledge everyone, but we\u2019ll thank a few of them like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sierranevada.com\/visit\/mills-river\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sierra Nevada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lookoutbrewing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lookout Brewing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riversiderhapsody.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riverside Rhapsody<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their continued and consistent purchasing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7780 size-featured_large\" src=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screen-Shot-2025-09-22-at-11.45.36-AM-1500x630.png\" alt=\"Hurricane Helene Reflections from Riverbend Malt House\" width=\"1500\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Visit Asheville<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asheville and the greater WNC area are heavily reliant upon tourism, which has seen expected decline since Hurricane Helene. Billy Strings blessed us with a two week residency in February, providing a huge economic boost to the small businesses throughout downtown. The music community also fanned out to support those that had lost their instruments in the flood through the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/restringappalachia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restring Appalachia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These efforts help preserve the old time music that has been passed down for generations throughout the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As spring opened up, businesses slowly began to see increased foot traffic and sales. Local leaders arranged for outdoor art markets in the reclaimed spaces throughout the River Arts District and the residences responded. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exploreasheville.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore Asheville<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group has also been hard at work engaging media far and wide to help us convey the message that we are open for business, and could use your support now more than ever. Big thanks to journalists like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joshuambernstein.com\/published-work\/after-the-flood-how-ashevilles-breweries-are-rebuilding-imbibe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joshua Bernstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCptmAkt5if\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenn Rice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for lending their influential voices to this narrative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the majority of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueridgeparkway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Ridge Parkway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reopened and craft breweries in Asheville are celebrating Oktoberfest all across town. With a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exploreasheville.com\/article\/asheville-fall-color-forecast-whats-new-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long and vibrant leaf season ahead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, predicted to peak late in October, now is the perfect time to plan your trip to the area. Our community has rallied to support one another in so many powerful ways and has made great strides towards a recovery that we now know will take years to achieve. The people of Western NC are no strangers to carrying the weight of rebuilding on their backs. They responded after the Flood of 1916,\u00a0 and more recently with Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
