Mexican Lagers are having a moment in the lager Renaissance sweeping the Southeastern states, and we couldn&#8217;t be more excited about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mexican Lager beer style, loosely defined, tends to mimic traditional German and Austrian-style Vienna Lagers made with corn additions in Mexico in the late 1800s and early 1900s. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casketbeer.com\/home\/2022\/12\/1\/mexican-lager-history-and-appropriation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casket Beer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gets into Mexican Lager\u2019s history if you want a deep dive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spring, breweries across the South are releasing Mexican Lagers made with our barley and corn malt across the map\u2014 adding another layer of local <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terroir <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the rich cultural history of the evolution of the style. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of malted corn in place of the flaked corn offers the opportunity to explore unique flavors that each variety can impart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our malted corn portfolio includes <a href=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/malt\/malted-corn\/\">Cumberland Corn<\/a>, which delivers the classic creamy sweetness of homemade cornbread. <a href=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/malt\/hickory-king-corn\/\">Hickory King Corn<\/a> goes in the opposite direction, contributing the crisp, earthy notes of hearth baked tortillas. <a href=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/malt\/bloody-butcher-corn\/\">Bloody Butcher Corn<\/a> brings a mix of chai spices not typically associated with Southern grown corn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think this style is gaining more and more popularity because of the \u201cstate-of-mind\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience these beers tend to offer, as well as their drinkability,\u201d says <\/span><b>Yee-Haw Brewing Co.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Head Brewer Dan Rowe. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They lean into being slightly malty, yet very approachable light-bodied lagers, with a dry finish. That earthy touch of corn in the flavor and reduced bitterness differentiates it from its counterparts from Germany, the Czech Republic and your standard American macro lager. Circling back around to that \u201cstate of mind\u201d experience, they\u2019re a perfect companion to virtually any outdoor activities, especially during all warmer weather months.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-featured_large wp-image-7077\" src=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screen-Shot-2024-05-02-at-5.39.59-PM-1016x630.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1016\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From May 3 to 5, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yee-Haw Brewing Co. hosted Cerveza Fest at the brewery\u2019s taprooms in Johnson City, Knoxville, and Nashville, Tennessee, as well as Greenville, South Carolina. The spotlights: their flagship Mexican Lager <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yeehawbrewing.com\/brews\/cerveza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cerveza<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the lime-infused <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6ZyfivL2zC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cerveza Lime<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made for the occasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yee-Haw\u2019s Cerveza is made with Riverbend Cumberland Corn, produced with Tennessee-grown corn. \u201cThe corn creates a lager with more complexity,\u201d says Rowe. \u201cYou start finding more and more slight nuances of sweetness and depending on the level of bitterness you\u2019re going for as a brewer, it can potentially be the key ingredient to providing balance.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marlow Artisanal Ales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agrees. The folks at Marlow are \u2018massive nerds about tortillas\u2019, reporting they can taste the variation between homemade tortillas made with different corn varieties. \u201cSo, we sought out heirloom varieties that would make the biggest impact in our beer,\u201d they explained. They chose Bloody Butcher and King Hickory corn malts for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6ZUw20JRb5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Marlito<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drinkable experience with slight corn perceived sweetness in the finish, although the beer finished quite dry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-featured_large wp-image-7071\" src=\"https:\/\/riverbendmalt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_2281-1047x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1047\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore even more Mexican Lagers made with Riverbend malted corn varieties, and other malt styles too.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>1718 Brewing Ocracoke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=3248014338806266&amp;set=a.2067360840204961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vera Cruz <\/a><\/strong>is made with just a touch of sea salt and lime, and Riverbend malt of course. It&#8217;s deliciously crisp and named after an old local party shoal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Akademia<\/b> <b>Brewing Company <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/akademiabc.com\/beer-menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Alma<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexican Lager is bright and effervescent with low bitterness and a subtle sweetness from the malt and flaked maize grain bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Alga Beer Co. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6bbpSUOFcQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>El Sur<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a highly anticipated release made with our Vienna and Hickory King Corn malt styles. Cumberland Corn smooths out the dryness for a rounded finish. Deep amber in color and robust in flavor, it\u2019s also snappy and refreshing.
